This is how Delhi is about to cut down in food wastage

The Delhi government has told the Supreme Court that it will take some stern — and possibly unpalatable — steps to reduce wastage of food. The development came following an observation on the topic by the apex court earlier this month.

Delhi Chief Secretary Vijay Kumar Dev told a bench headed by Justice Madan B Lokur on Tuesday, December 11, that the state government was looking to limit the number of guests at weddings to address the situation.

The move is to be apparently directed at only “extravagant” weddings. However, the criteria to determine the extravagance of weddings has not been elaborated on yet.

The move may raise the hackles of several sections of society. It is quite possible that people may oppose this move, which has a good intention at its core.

The food wastage remedy

According to a PTI report, the Supreme Court Bench, which also has Justices Deepak Gupta and Hemant Gupta, noted: “It is stated (by chief secretary) that some alternatives are being discussed and there appears to be at least two options that are available and two-pronged strategy is also being actively considered so that availability of food in functions and the number of guests is limited, and the quality of food is also maintained.”

Dev, on his part, told the court that the solutions had been discussed with the lieutenant-governor (L-G) of Delhi, and that the latter had expressed no objections to it.

He also said: “We can have guest control on one hand and regulation under the Food Safety and Standards Act where institutional arrangements can be made between the caterers and NGOs, who are providing foods to the destitutes.”

He also said about the mis-utilisation of water: “Treatment of waste water is also a serious issue which led to environmental degradation. Whatever directions the Supreme Court will give, we will follow. We will have to tackle these two issues.”

Dev also told the bench that it would take the Delhi government eight weeks’ time to come out with a policy on this.
