Indian cop demands pizza and chilli chicken from complainant, suspended

Pizza

A woman cop from the North Indian state of Uttar Pradesh was suspended from active duty following allegations that she demanded free food, including pizza, from a complainant.

The suspension came after news of the demand went viral on social media.

Unjust demands?

The Lucknow Police have reportedly suspended Sub-Inspector Sumitra Devi, who was associated with the Hasanganj Police Station in the state capital, after the complainant approached a top cop.

Restaurant-owner Rohit Beri had initially gone to the police to register a complaint against one Sumit Beri. Sumit, said Rohit, had duped him of Rs 7,000.

Sumitra Devi registered the First Information Report (FIR), but demanded that Rohit bring pizza and chilli chicken the next time he came, or she would not give him a copy of the FIR.

“She asked us to bring food and take our FIR copy. We supplied the order but they returned it and paid us after the incident went viral on social media,” News 18 quoted Rohit as saying.

Rohit, meanwhile, complained to the local Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) about Sumitra Devi’s demands.

SSP Hirendra Kumar confirmed that Sumitra Devi had been suspended, according to a report by news agency ANI. He had also ordered a departmental inquiry into the matter, said the report.

Outrage on social media

A police spokesperson confirmed the incident. “Sumitra asked complainant Rohit Beri for a free pizza and chilly chicken from his restaurant. The incident went viral on social media after it was reported,” said police spokesperson AK Singh.

“The SSP ordered ASP (trans-Gomti) to look into the matter on Friday. An investigation found that Sumitra had demanded food for registering an FIR,” he added.

Meanwhile, social media expressed their outrage over such blatant bribe demands.
