Watch viral video: BSP workers loot Mayawati birthday cake

In a bizarre video that is going viral online, members of the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) are seen looting a birthday cake that was meant to be cut to celebrate party chief Mayawati turning a year older.

The 32-second video emerged online on Tuesday, January 15. It was tweeted out by the UP arm of news agency Asian News International (ANI).

There has been no official reaction to or statement from the Uttar Pradesh (UP)-based political party on the incident.

Berserk over birthday cake

Born on January 15, 1956, Mayawati rose through the ranks of the BSP with the help of her mentor Kanshi Ram, the founder of the party.

She was even chief minister of UP on four occasions. She has been the BSP president since September 2003.

The height of her political career saw her birthday being celebrated with much gala and pomp all across UP. However, with her out of power, the celebrations are somewhat muted now.

One such celebration was organised by local members of the BSP at Amroha — 400 km from UP’s capital city Lucknow — on Tuesday.

The ANI UP video shows that at some point the BSP members and activists decided to take matters — in this case the cake — into their own hands and celebrate accordingly.

The video clip shows people grabbing chunks out of the cake and slinking out of the way to let others have a go at what they have left behind.

People react

The reaction to the video was on expected lines. While some made fun of the party and its members, others rued the spectacle being made of the event.

That the BSP members were seen in the video shouting slogans in support of Mayawati after the incident was also pointed out by some. Here’s the same video from a different angle:
