India-based Chef Vishnu Manohar managed to spread awareness about World Food Day recently when he cooked 3,000 kg of khichdi in a single utensil.
World Food Day is celebrated on October 16 every year to spread awareness about food shortage and hunger.
The day is observed to mark the establishment of the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations. It started in 1979, and has had a new theme to it every year since 1981.
The overall effort
The cooking took place from 10 am on October 14 at Chitnis Park Stadium in Nagpur. It was part of an effort to celebrate World Food Day in advance.
While the food took a few hours to cook, it was tasted by 6,000-7,000 people, who polished it all off.
The utensil – a wok of sorts – alone was a behemoth in its own right, with a diameter of 10 feet. Weighing more than 500 kg, it had been custom-made by Spurthee Industries.
Chef Vishnu Manohar set a record?
The quantities of the ingredients that went into the khichdi – a typical Indian dish made usually with rice and lentils, and considered a staple for nourishing those in ill-health – were also nothing short of marvellous.
The water alone that went into Manohar’s meal was measured at 2,500-3,000 litres.
These apart, 500 kg lentils, 100 kg rice, 50 kg cooking oil, 100 kg carrots, 50 kg curd and 210 kg spices and vegetables went into the khichdi.

It is now up to the record books to officially announce whether Manohar has managed to set a new benchmark.
It may be noted that Manohar already holds the record for the longest time spent by a chef cooking non-stop: 53 hours.
